Nineteen Hundred – Fall Edition 2025

Boston shines in the fall, with brilliant foliage, refreshing crisp air, and endless ways to enjoy the season. In the latest edition of Nineteen Hundred, we share some of our favorite ways to experience the city at its autumn best.

Taking Root in the Past

When we undertook reconcepting the restaurant space that is now Willow & Ivy, we worked hard with our design firm, Bergmeyer, to ensure that we were connecting Willow & Ivy to both our own past as well as rooting the space in Boston itself. From upholstered wall coverings that draw on the restaurant’s days as Diamond Jim’s to the Venetian mosaic floor under the bar that mirrors the original lobby flooring to the cobblestone entryway, there are nods to the past in nearly every nook of the restaurant.

In Bergmeyer’s own words:

From the moment you step in off the sloping city sidewalk, you feel the layered history of the place. The building’s age (125 years and counting) presented both quirks and charms: uneven levels, historic materials, and features shaped by decades of service. Rather than mask these traits, we let them guide us. Original columns were left in place. Molding was restored where possible. A white mosaic floor discovered in a closet — dating back to the early 1900s — became the inspiration for new tiling throughout the main dining space.

Design decisions leaned into storytelling. The palette, rich in natural textures and softness, combines warm brick, inviting greens, and floral tones like mauve and blush — a subtle nod to Back Bay’s iconic charms, such as the blossoming star magnolia trees and the nearby Public Garden. Preserved plants and wooden features cascade overhead, evoking the embrace of a weeping willow tree. Ivy climbing the walls. Together, these details transform the space into something more than a restaurant: a place where memory and modernity meet.

The hostess check-in greets guests in a low-lit chamber, transitioning into a brighter, window-lined dining room at the heart of the space. Willow & Ivy was always intended to feel residential, elegant, and familiar — not a flashy hospitality insert, but something that could have always existed within the hotel’s original blueprint.

There’s a quiet nod to Boston’s history embedded throughout, echoing the spirit of the women who once graced the Lenox. One of them, Isabella Stewart Gardner, served as an informal muse — a socialite known for her bohemian charm and salon gatherings during the same era the hotel first opened. That spirit of eclectic elegance lives on here.

Let Us Light Your Fire!

One of the most unique features at The Lenox is the many rooms with wood-burning fireplaces right inside them. Back when The Lenox first opened in 1900, the fireplaces were touted as a benefit not only due to the ambiance they provided, but as dedicated in-room heating! Our other rooms were all heated by a central coal-fire system. In the 80’s, many of our fireplaces were bricked over and made non-functioning, only to be rescued and restored in the mid-2010’s. Join us on a visual journey to see how our fireplace rooms have evolved over the years!

Lobstering in Boston Harbor

There’s perhaps not more quintessential a Bostonian & New England food than lobster. From its history as a low-cost staple for prisoners to its now prized position as a high-end local culinary delight. Boston Harbor itself is home to a robust lobster population supporting a thriving community of independent lobstermen.

We recently took the opportunity to join Captain Fred aboard his active lobstering boat, the Tuppence. After joining him at a dock in Boston’s Seaport district, we went on a relatively calm two-hour journey through Boston Harbor. With a backdrop of the Boston skyline and the Boston Harbor Islands, we learned all about the lobstering economy in the area as well as how lobster fishing works today. We watched as Captain Fred pulled in his lobster traps, inspected the caught lobsters for size, and had the chance to bind our own lobster’s claws. He spoke about the conservation methods the fisherman have come up with on their own as well as the challenges lobsterman face today.

We’re extremely excited to be able to offer a Boston Harbor Lobster Experience package including a five-course tasting menu in Willow & Ivy using the very lobsters you catch in the harbor. It’s sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime New England experience!

Beach Bound!

You don’t have to leave the city—or even go far from it—to enjoy a beach day in Boston. While it may be better known for brownstones, baked beans, and Bruins games, Boston also has access to some truly beautiful beaches just a short drive or train ride away. Whether you’re looking for a quiet seaside escape, family-friendly fun, or just a spot to dip your toes in the Atlantic, there’s a beach for every kind of summer day.

Here’s a guide to some of the best beaches near Boston—each offering its own charm, scenery, and easy access from the city.

Revere Beach (Revere, MA)

Distance from Boston: ~5 miles / ~20 minutes by car or T
Getting There: Blue Line to Revere Beach Station

Revere Beach holds a special place in history as America’s first public beach, and today it remains one of the most accessible stretches of sand near the city. The beach runs for about three miles and features a wide promenade perfect for walking, jogging, or grabbing a slice of beach pizza. The beach is staffed with lifeguards, occasional food trucks and events, and public restrooms which is beaching made easy. On a hot summer day this is the perfect excursion for family or friends to get coastal!

Castle Island & Pleasure Bay (South Boston)

Distance from The Lenox: ~3 miles / ~15 minutes by car or bus
Getting There: #9 bus or uber

If you want a beach experience without leaving Boston, Castle Island is your spot. Located in Southie, Pleasure Bay offers calm, clean waters and scenic views of Boston Harbor. It’s especially ideal for families with young kids thanks to its gentle waves and looped walking path around the bay. It also has the famous eatery, Sullivan’s, a casual seaside snack shack for hot dogs, lobster rolls, soft serve, or other provisions to grab between beach volleyball games. Uniquely, this beach area is only feet away from Fort Independence, a historic site open for seasonal tours, which is a great way to learn a thing or two during your beach day. This beach merges with another South Boston gem, Carson Beach which is part of the South Boston Waterfront Park system. It’s got great views of the harbor islands and plenty of room to spread out. There’s also a bike path, volleyball courts, and picnic areas! Usually a popular spot amongst the locals, this beach is a fun and active spot right in Boston.

Nantasket Beach (Hull, MA)

Distance from Boston: ~20 miles / ~40 minutes by car or Hingham/hull ferry
Getting There: MBTA ferry from Long Wharf to Hull + short shuttle/taxi

Located on the South Shore, Nantasket Beach in Hull offers a wide, flat shoreline perfect for walking at low tide. The waves are bigger here than at Boston Harbor beaches, making it a good pick for boogie boarding and splashing around. There’s also a boardwalk area with arcades, a carousel and beach restaurants as far as the eye can see! Nantasket is a local favorite because of the endless amounts of activities to do coupled with a great beach walk. It’s a little more of a day trip, but still very doable for a city dweller, and the ferry is a fun experience in and of itself! With a viewing deck and snack bar you can grab a drink and head up top to try and catch some whale sighting on your way in and out of the city!

Paddling the Frog Pond

There are few things more charming in Boston than a ride on the Swan Boats in the Public Garden. Gliding quietly through the lagoon, the Swan Boats have been a beloved tradition since 1877. That’s right, these elegant paddle boats have been delighting generations for nearly 150 years! The story of the Swan Boats begins with a man named Robert Paget, a boat builder and former shipyard worker who was inspired by the opera Lohengrin, in which a knight crosses a river in a boat pulled by a swan. With a bit of theatrical flair and clever engineering, Paget created a pontoon-style boat with a swan figure covering the paddle mechanism. The boats were human-powered, with a driver pedaling in a way not too differently from a modern bicycle.

Since their debut, the Swan Boats have remained in the Paget family, passed down through four generations who continue to maintain and operate them each season. Over time, the boats themselves have been slightly updated and modernized, but they’ve always preserved their quaint and timeless design. Today, each Swan Boat carries up to 20 passengers on a gentle, 15-minute loop through the serene lagoon, surrounded by willows, flowers, ducks, and yes, actual swans.

The Swan Boats are more than just a novelty; they’re a symbol of the city’s peaceful green spaces and its dedication to preserving history and tradition. Operated seasonally from April through Labor Day, the boats have weathered wars, economic downturns, and even a global pandemic, returning each spring as a gentle sign that Boston’s heart still beats strong.

The Swan boats and Boston’s iconic Common is nearly three blocks from the front doors of the Lenox Hotel. Whether you’re looking to catch a ride or just take a stroll through the park, seeing the swan boats amongst the city’s backdrop is an unforgettable experience for tourists and visitors alike.

Greenhouse Margarita

We tasked our bartender team to come up with some creative cocktails for our new drink menu at Willow & Ivy and we were blown away by the creativity and craftsmanship of their concoctions! Be sure to check out their creations on our drink menu, found here.

Check out this refreshing twist on a spicy margarita created by Javier – the feeling of spring & summer itself. “With bright, fresh flavors and simplicity, there’s nothing more quintessentially warm weather than herbs and flowers. Cilantro is often used in cooking. but less explored in cocktails. I wanted to play on a memory and have the familiar flavor in a different experience.” Try this at home or stop by and have the team whip one up for you!

To make the Greenhouse Margarita:

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Ghost Tequila
  • 1 oz Cointreau
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 0.5 oz Simple Syrup
  • Fresh Cilantro
  • Tajin-Dipped Lime Wedge for Garnish

Method

  • Muddle cilantro including stems (the stems have tons of flavor!) in a cocktail shaker
  • Add the Ghost tequila, cointreau, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and ice
  • Shake vigorously until very cold
  • Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a rocks glass with ice
  • Garnish with a lime wedge dipped in Tajin

From Ireland to Boston

Last fall, a small group of us took a pilgrimage of sorts to Ireland in order to gain a deeper understanding and appreciate of Irish food & what makes an Irish pub an Irish pub. We went on a whirlwind tour of Dublin & beyond, spending time in pubs & restaurants as guests and behind the scenes talking to chefs & bartenders. We walked the rolling hills and spent time at the shore. What we found was a country with a strong pride and commitment to a sense of place. Pubs that have an almost indescribable quality of being more than just a place to eat, but that serve as communal spaces with hospitality at the core.

The Irish chefs we spoke to were committed to supporting Irish farmers & food purveyors. These commitments resonated strongly with our own love for sourcing the best local products we ourselves can find, while also incorporating true Irish ingredients such as Irish butter & cheese.

Some ideas we had been toying with received a bit of a modification. A 99 Flake is an incredibly common & popular quick dessert in Ireland – a vanilla soft serve in a cone with a Flake bar stuck in the side. We learned that the components of a 99 Flake are sacrosanct and, while we were planning our own version, it was important that we not brand it as an authentic 99 Flake, but a Sweeney’s 99 Flake! Ours features Baileys ice cream & Baileys caramel, something that might be Irish in origin but wouldn’t qualify as a 99 Flake in Ireland.

We’ve taken plenty of other classic dishes & put a Bostonian/American spin to them. Our classic Irish stew is modernized as a beautiful braised short rib slow cooked in Guinness with local roots. Our take on a classic Irish pub dish, the toastie, features Irish ham & Irish cheddar but served alongside a roasted tomato soup, a real meeting of Irish & American classics. We visited the Guinness Storehouse and learned the importance and steps to a proper pint.

More than anything, we took back a sense of love the Irish people have for both their neighbors, their homeland, and for creating spaces of hospitality. It’s our goal not to recreate an authentic Irish pub to the letter if it were transported to Boston, but to create a space with great food & drink served with heartfelt hospitality. Truly what an Irish pub would be if it were made in America.

Nineteen Hundred – Holiday Edition 2024

The Holiday Volume of Nineteen Hundred is packed with festive, wintry cheer! From a roundup of our favorite Mercantile holiday gifts, Boston holiday markets, to our eighth year of supporting Wonderfund through Room in Your Heart, this edition is all about holiday festivities.

Local Honeycrisp Apple Crisp

If you haven’t been to Sweeney’s yet, you haven’t had the chance to try one of our amazing new desserts, the Local Honeycrisp Apple Crisp. Here’s my rendition of this traditional fall favorite, which is delicious served with a dollop of ice cream or whipped cream on top. I recently had the pleasure of appearing on The Rhode Show preparing this dessert – check it out here.

Be sure to stop by and try it out, or better yet – you can make at home with the recipe below!

Crisp Topping Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/8 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2lb unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp all purpose flour

Apple Filling Ingredients:

  • 4 large honeycrisp apples, peeled & diced
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla paste
  • Pinch of sea salt

Method:

  • Sauté the apples with butter, cinnamon, and vanilla
  • Cook until the apples begin to turn tender, but don’t cook them too much or you’ll have made applesauce (also delicious!)
  • Transfer apples into a pie dish
  • For the crisp topping, toast the raw oats in a 350°F until golden brown
  • Combine butter, toasted oats, flour, & sugar
  • Spread the crisp topping mixture on a baking pan and toast in a 350°F until the entire mixture is golden brown
  • Sprinkle toasted crisp topping over the apples
  • Bake at 350°F until bubbly
  • Serve warm, topped with your favorite ice cream!

Nineteen Hundred – Fall Edition 2024

Boston is a fantastic place to visit in the fall, with its beautiful foliage, crisp weather, and a wide range of activities to enjoy. Discover some of our favorite ways to explore the city during one of our favorite seasons in the latest edition of Nineteen Hundred.

Widowmaker Brewing

If you find yourself in Braintree, Massachusetts, and you’re a fan of craft beer, there’s a hidden gem you absolutely must visit: Widowmaker Brewing. Established in 2016 by Ryan Lavery and Colin Foley, Widowmaker has quickly made a name for itself in the New England craft beer scene, known for its innovative brews and welcoming atmosphere.

Widowmaker Brewing is more than just a place to grab a drink—it’s a community! The taproom is spacious yet cozy, with a rustic charm that makes you feel right at home. Large communal tables encourage mingling with fellow beer enthusiasts, and the staff is always eager to talk about their latest creations or recommend a beer that suits your palate. On weekends, the brewery often hosts food trucks and live music, turning any visit into a lively event. Widowmaker Brewing isn’t just about the beer, it’s about bringing people together. The brewery frequently hosts events such as trivia nights, beer yoga, and charity fundraisers. They also participate in local beer festivals and collaborate with other breweries, contributing to the dynamic craft beer culture in the region.

At the heart of Widowmaker Brewing is, of course, the beer. Their lineup is diverse, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Here are a couple of standout options:

  • Riff City Lager – Widowmaker’s new year-round lager, Riff City was designed to showcase the high-quality ingredients they use to create our lagers. Brewed with a single malt imported from Germany and fermented cold and slow to ensure a smooth lager and accentuate the steeped noble hops. The German malt and lager yeast lend a biscuit-like aroma, mildly sweet yet crisp flavor, and the hops provide a light, floral, and subtle bitter bite culminating in an elevated yet simply delicious offering. The true Boston Lager.

  • Deadly Gardens Dark Lager – brewed with a blend of Weyermann Floor Malted Pilsner and a few specialty malts with the goal of pushing max flavor with a simple recipe and hyper attention to process. Pouring dark with a beautiful tan head, this beer is incredibly crushable at 5.1% with a ton of body and subtle complexity. Tasting notes include chocolate and oatmeal cookies. Cold and dark, like a winter in New England.

Widowmaker is also known for its limited releases and experimental brews, so there’s always something new and exciting on tap! Be sure to stop by our Irish pub Sweeney’s on Boylston to try current beer on tap, Blue Comet!
